August 15: Dekapentavgoustos

The day that Aegean celebrates…

…With masses and fairs, litanies and treats…it is the name day of Panaghia (Virgin Mary), and a common feeling of reverence unites the golden Aegean islands.

The numerous white steeple churches dedicated to the name of Panaghia celebrate today, with their cool yards decorated with fresh basil and colorful flags.

If you start the day by going to the church, you will see local people wearing their best suits and dresses; You will smell the strong aromas of the flower garlands that frame the icon of the Virgin Mary and the beeswax candles; You will hear the chanting with the characteristic island accents, that differ from one island to another; You will be given treats: traditional almond biscuits and pasteli. Time to exchange wishes and eat with family and friends, since most houses in Greece have one, or more generations of Marias: Houses celebrate and villages celebrate, it’s all about being moved by the traditional sound of the Aegean violin.

This day is a blend of religious inner peace and outgoing joy. The coexistence of spirituality and sociality. From small family gatherings to the most famous Aegean panigiria, the August 15 is the day that symbolizes the heart of the summer.
