Chestnuts

One of the things that I miss about Athens, is the smell of chestnuts roasted over charcoal; this healthy street food that vendors sell all over the city, makes its appearance on autumn rainy days like the one we have today. It’s funny, when I lived in Athens, chestnuts made me think of nature, of a big fireplace in a country house and of red tree leaves on the ground. Now, that I live on an island, in the countryside, chestnuts made me think of Athens – and I wouldn’t mind some window-shopping under my umbrella holding a paper bag full of warm chestnuts…

Anyway, I will skip the window-shopping part, and I will try to roast some chestnuts in the fireplace. I just discovered fire, have a new fireplace and I am so in the – I cook everything in the  fireplace- phase. When cooking experiments are over, I will share some of the recipes that I enjoyed.

What about you? Do you have a favorite seasonal street food?

Do you buy roasted chestnuts or do you prefer to cook them at home?
